Internet Security Systems Protection Advisory
April 12, 2005

Microsoft Exchange Remote Compromise

Summary:

ISS has shipped protection for a flaw X-Force has discovered in Microsoft.s
Exchange SMTP Server. Exchange is a dominant corporate email platform, and
is commonly used by large enterprises. A heap-based buffer overflow
vulnerability can be triggered for an extended SMTP verb, allowing an
attacker to completely compromise an Exchange installation.

Business Impact:

Compromise of networks and machines using affected Exchange products may
lead to exposure of large amounts of confidential information, loss of
productivity, and further network compromise. No user-interaction is
required to exploit this vulnerability. Successful exploitation would
grant an attacker administrative privileges on the target Exchange
server, and could potentially expose all corporate email communications.
