Process Explorer "CompanyName" Buffer Overflow

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA16525

VERIFY ADVISORY:

CRITICAL:
Less critical

IMPACT:
Privilege escalation

WHERE:
Local system

SOFTWARE:
Sysinternals Process Explorer 9.x
http://secunia.com/product/5598/

DESCRIPTION:
ATmaCA has discovered a vulnerability in Process Explorer, which
potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain
escalated privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when handling
overly long "CompanyName" VersionInfo data of a running process. This
can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow and may allow
execution of arbitrary code.

Successful exploitation requires that a user runs a specially crafted
program and convinces the administrator to view the properties of the
malicious running process.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 9.12, and also
reported in version 9.23. Other versions may also be affected.

SOLUTION:
Update to version 9.24.
